VACATION READING CLUB 2012
DREAM BIG, READ! END OF SUMMER PICNIC
Every year libraries across the state of New Jersey encourage children to read during the summer in order to be better prepared for school in the fall. The Tinton Falls Public Library encourages children to read and parents to get involved by planning a summer-long series of prizes and activities for our patrons.
The Vacation Reading Club ends the summer with a big celebration of all those readers who have met their goals for summer reading by holding a picnic with live entertainment and the awarding of special prizes. Not only is there food at the picnic and a performer, the library staff and teen volunteers also offer games, balloon animals, face painting and temporary tattoos to everyone who attends.
This year, the special prizes were handed out by Mayor Michael Skudera, assisted by Christine Anderson who coordinates the teen volunteer program at the library. The games and activities were planned by Teresa Cuesta, Youth Services Coordinator at the library and the participants in the teen volunteer program.
The performer this year was Miss Melissa's Music for Aardvarks. She really got everyone up and dancing! Pizza was supplied by the library from Luigi's in Lincroft. Additional snacks and desserts were brought by parents who helped support the Vacation Reading Program by encouraging their children to participate.
The event was also attended by Borough Council Members Nancyanne Fama, liaison to the library and Gary Baldwin, Borough Council President. Due to predictions of thunderstorms, the picnic was held indoors for the first time at Borough Hall in the Community Room. Miss Melissa's music, the children, teen volunteers and parents rocked the building!
